Gulf Harbors Yacht Club is committed to improving our environment and to support this effort we are working with local volunteers to participate in a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program.
A vertical oyster garden is basically a 12-to-14-inch stainless wire with about a dozen discarded oyster shells strung to it and then suspended off our docks where the oyster shells are naturally populated with tiny oyster seeds. Within about 3 months each VOG will contain about 20 oysters which filter 50 gallons of seawater per day. We now have over 100 VOGs suspended from our docks that when mature will filter 100,000 gallons of seawater per day.
